mission taste tour: pizzeria delfina (aka i’m addicted to food porn)

i am so that girl who takes pictures of her food in restaurants now. i never thought i’d get to this point, even after starting a food blog. i figured i’d mostly take photos of things i cooked at home since i’m not trying to write restaurant reviews or anything (i don’t think anyone would hire me considering the only descriptive words i know are variations of the word AWESOME). but i keep coming across food that’s so un-fucking-believably good that i have to whip out my camera and piss off my roommates by taking photos before they’re allowed to tear apart a fresh-out-of-the oven delfina pizza.

continuing the mission taste tour of so-crazy-good-it’s-unfair places on my block, we went to pizzeria delfina tonight after a wine tasting across the street. for the second night in a row, i embarrassed annie and gina by snapping pictures of our food (at least i turned off the awkwardly loud shutter sound this time). how could i help it when the special ‘purgatorio’ pizza looked like this:

oh holy shit. don’t you just want to lick your computer screen? are you not uncontrollably drooling and quietly moaning out of desire for this spicy tomato and eggy goodness slice of perfection? if you remain unmoved, do you even have a soul or does a cold and unforgiving automaton heart beat inside your stomach-free robot body? let’s try this one:

crab-polpette1

well HELLO little deep fried crab polpette friends (italian meatballs). you are so adorably cute and round with your little herb sprinkles that i want to put you in my pocket and take you home to be my friends and then EAT THE SHIT OUT OF YOU. but it would be unfair to you and painful for me to get attached and then consume your delicious fried little selves, so i will just eat you now and spare us both the awkwardness of a short-term relationship that we both know is not going to end well.  at least not for you.

ready for more food porn and bizarre conversations with my dinner? i did mention i just went to a wine tasting, right? this chardonnay/barbera/pinot noir – fueled food porn obsession is getting out of hand but please don’t judge me. addiction is a serious disease.

back to the good stuff. here’s what those tasty crab polpette friends look like when you tear them apart to see the creamy crab-y tastiness inside:

we also had an incredibly delicious speck pizza (smoked prosciutto) with green garlic, pecorino, and black pepper. i couldn’t decide which photo showed off its assets better, and since we’re on a gluttonous food porn overload anyway, i’m including both (aside: i thought about photoshopping a piece of pizza into a playboy centerfold and including its stats, as in ‘trixie enjoys working with power tools, teaching step aerobics, and getting sprinkled with crushed red pepper!’ but googling playboy centerfolds was getting to be a bit much for me).

oh speck pie. the full body shot best showcases your curvaceous shape, your slightly charred yet still lovely browned crust, the artful draping of your speck garlands. this photo also randomly includes a glimpse of the nice pizzeria delfina touch of a small plate with dried oregano, crushed red pepper and freshly grated parmesan.  but now, time for your close up:

mmm. speck pie, this shot really shows off your personality – the rich meatiness of your smoked prosciutto, the delightful sprinklings of black pepper strewn across your slices, the added flavor depth of your green garlic , and the beautiful contrasts of color up close.

jessica and olivia, my egg-on-pizza loving friends, here is a gratituous yolk shot for you. if food porn had ratings, this one might be a little much for the kiddies:

if you’d like to see the inside of the restaurant producing these mini works of art, here’s a shot of the open kitchen and bar area, including a ceiling-high stack of pizza boxes and a gorgeous mural by andre karpov, an artist with murals all over the mission.

yes the space is tiny, yes it gets very crowded, and yes you will probably have to wait. but write your name on the blackboard, get a glass of wine (they have a great selection, more on that coming soon) and sit outside and enjoy 18th street. yes you’ll be in my way when i try to walk down the sidewalk but i appreciate you appreciating this pizza, so enjoy.  and lastly, for some meta-food porn, i’ve included a shot of the menu.  i’ve made many a friend wait on a sidewalk or dragged them across the street with me so i can read the menu of some intriguing looking restaurant. now you can read the pizzeria delfina menu and plan your next meal there:

if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the options, my roommate gina is way into the simple margherita and the creamy panna. i like the slightly bitter greenness of the broccoli raab and their housemade fennel salsiccia (italian sausage) with peppers and onions.

mmmmmmm. is it wrong that i’m hungry again?

All of those look so astoundingly delicious. They have no right not to have all of those on the regular menu. I just know that if I showed up I’d probably be more likely to be confronted with specials containing something entirely abhorrent and unfit for consumption, like mushrooms, all over it instead of having to make a terrible choice between two amazingly delicious looking pizzas.
